CLUB HISTORY

Harlow Hawks Basketball Club has come a long way and has grown quite considerably over the last few years. Below are some of the main points

Shab Niaz took on the Coaching role for the sessions at short notice upon request by the Sportcentre in September 1999 when the previous coach advised that he would not be coming back.

During the course of the year Shab Niaz sat down with the Sportcentre Coaching officer and put together a plan to initiate the process for setting up a team to play in the Herts league for the following season starting in Sept 2000 and have the team based at the Sportcentre.

Setting up friendly games and summer league with a couple of teams so as to get competitive games for the new team. This has run for number a number of the years, with the odd break.

Organising a mini junior league with about 4 teams for the younger sessions, which ran only for one year

With a new logo and uniforms, Hawks entered Herts League Division 2 for the 2000-01 with a very young squad, as nearly all of the players were U18.

There was a merger between the junior sections of Hawks and Harlow’s other basketball team (Wildcats) to create a single junior club in the town. But this folded after 1 ½ years as the coach of the Juniors moved away due to a new job.

Hawks seniors struggled a few seasons due to injuries and number of personnel, at times only able to get 6/7 players to games.

Hawks had their first successful season in 2004-05 when they won Herts Div 2 and also reached their first major final, the Herts County Plate which they won. The Sportcentre had started another junior basketball session as part of their coaching programme and requested help with coaching. This was where the current Hawks junior programme started from with about 17 players of various ages.

Having being promoted to Herts Div 1, Hawks finished bottom and came straight back down to Div 2. However they had better luck in their first year in the National Founders Cup where they lost in the final. Hawks juniors entered the first Herts JCVL which was for U14 and U16’s only. The U14’s finished runners up in the league.

The Hawks senior team had their most successful season (2006-07) as they won six trophies including the National Founders Cup and not being defeated in Herts Div 2. The Herts JCVL expanded to have include an U11 age group. Hawks entered team in each age group but found it tough going.

For the 2007-08 season, the club grew a lot with a numbers increasing in all age groups and most notably in the U8 and U11 age groups. Also the senior section of the club attracted a lot of players with the open scrimmage sessions through the season become very popular. Other notable things for this season was that Hawks hosted the Junior Central Venue League (JCVL) for the first time and it was very successful

The club expanded even more for the 2008-09 season  with increased turnout towards the end of last season in the U11's leading to two teams in the JCVL. A second Senior team was setup and  competed in Herts Div 2 finishing joint 6th out of 8 teams, with improved performances towards the end of the season. The social basketball session for adults was also setup at the start of the season and became popular with good regular turn outs, which is still the case. The senior 1st team won the Herts Div 1 title and the U14 team were undefeated in the JCVL.
